Then what can we do, at home, if we don't want to buy a mask, will covering our mouths and noses in any cloth( say a bandana?) be just as effective?

If wearing a surgical mask helps?
It might not be as effective as a mask because the materials are different and the cloth might not be as good. It could definitely help keep germs from spreading because you wouldn't be breathing the germs out into the atmosphere.
