He had two rare diseases: Vitiligo and Lupus.

Because of those two diseases his skin was practically allergic to the sun. Even if he was in the shade his skin could still be damaged by UV rays.





He had to cover his face because it would be much, much more prone to burning than a normal person's skin. Obviously bruning of skin can dramatically increase the chances of catching skin cancer which Michael Jackson was diagnosed with very recently in his face.





To say that his nose would fall off or that he was a germaphobe is complete and utter rubbish.
Some people say it was to avoid germs and others have said it was to cover plastic surgerys.





Also, could be to avoid photographers getting a good picture of him for his privacy sake.
