What is with Japanese people and surgical masks?

I've now seen this numerous times on many different shows. Japanese people (usually older men) wearing those white surgical masks over their mouths. If there is a problem with the air in Japan why isn't everyone wearing them? What are they doing? Are they modern day ninjas? What the hell is going on in Japan? What is with Japanese people and surgical masks?

I don't think they necessarily have SARS, but maybe as a preventative. I remember when the outbreak occurred, everyone was wearing them. Report Abuse

The surgical masks are for two purposes:.

First to protect others from your germs when you are sick or coughing, and second, to protect yourself from others' germs when you are feeling less than well.

When there is an epidemic, many public buildings may require their use to enter.

They are also worn to keep dust out of your nose and mouth when you ride a bicycle or moped.
