Jack Russells are high energy. If you don't burn off that energy, it will seem as if you have a hyper dog. The dog is highly creative and will create his or her own entertainment. Most owners don't appreciate the entertainment the dog comes up with.
Once you understand the correct way to train this kind of dog, the dog can do great. One common problem is that trying to force the dog or get harsh with this often sensitive dog, will create a training disaster. The dog learns quickly but gets bored with repetition, and will then creatively do something more entertaining, resulting in the command that you just gave being ignored.
This dog is not recommended for beginners or people who are not committed to training and exercising a dog. (The dog will compromise on exercise, but keep in mind the dog can run for miles, take a nap, and be ready to go again.)
I'm an owner of a Jack Russell Terrier, and I consults with a lot of problems with this breed. I also write a column for True Grit, the magazine for the Jack Russell Terrier.
