Why do some people in asian countries wear surgical masks while walking around?

SARS.Why do some people in asian countries wear surgical masks while walking around?
I don't know if this is what you're talking about... but I know there is one philosophy that goes to extremes to avoid killing others or causing pain to others. People who observe this philosophy wear masks to prevent the breathing in of gnats and other small insects, so as to not unnecessarily kill another being. Why do some people in asian countries wear surgical masks while walking around?
Well first of it can be a cultural thing.

Like in Japan for example people walk around with surgical masks because they are sick and cannot afford to spend the day at home and DO NOT want to risk spreading the disease to other people. Its infection control and protects people around them from catching the disease/virus or whatever.

Another reason may be due to the fumes and air pollution, protecting ur airways to and from work and where ever you are going.
A number of different reasons.. to keep from spreading illness, to prevent illness and to filter pollution. When you are in a very populated area it is much easier to get sick and spread germs. That is why there is more sickness in the winter because people are more together in tighter spaces.
its because parts of asia (china) are going through their industiral revolution, Japan got nucked they have different sutff in the air, but they wear the masks to make sure they don't get sick or get others sick.
because of the quality of the air, but mostly because they're sick and don't want to spread it. you find it often in japan.
Sick people often does that in Asia, they didn't want to pass around. It's an etiquite.
Because they are sick, and don't want to pass around their cold or whatever they caught...
Because they may have the flu or something that may be contagious. They wear a mask out of courtesy to others.
Pollution from all the greenhouse gasses produced by factories and cars and stuff.
pollution and smog.
air borne diseases?
