Can you pack a surgical face mask in your carryon bag when traveling overseas?

Will be traveling to Italy in October. Am concerned about the Flu outbreak upon departure and return. Is taking a face mask going to be a problem in my carryon luggage? Thank you.Can you pack a surgical face mask in your carryon bag when traveling overseas?
Yes, you can bring/wear a surgical face mask. Now, this will probably protect others if you're infected as it will minimize droplets if you cough.

It will not protect you if the disease is in the air.

This is why you often see this in asian part of the world. They are concerned not to spread any possible disease.

Six month ago I was on a plane between Stockholm-Helsinki. I sat in business but looked down toward economy. It was packed with japanese tourists, all wearing masks. It looked funny but I realize that they (as i understand it) do it as a gesture of politeness when a disease is around. Can you pack a surgical face mask in your carryon bag when traveling overseas?
Yes, can I've seen several images on TV where people were

wearing the masks for the same reason you mention. You

can wear it while you are flying.
