Every time I use the blue painters masking tape the paint still manages to get through and I dont get clean lines! Is there any tricks I need to do?How do you get paint to not go through the blue masking tape?
Use a damp sponge or cloth and gently clean the surface where the tape is going to be applied, blue tape is great but doesn't like dust.Ive had this happen to me also and it's aggravating. If you mop on to much paint at the mask line it will get through so go easy on the paint in that area.Good LuckHow do you get paint to not go through the blue masking tape?
After cleaning the area the tape will stick to, applying the tape, re-pressing it down before you paint, there is a trick of the trade faux finishers use to create straight lines on rough surfaces that may help you:
Take a clear non-silicone caulking and put a very thin coat over the edge of the tape closest to the side of the wall you are painting. This is done best by putting a little bit on the tip of your finger and sliding it down the seam of the tape. Remember, this is a very very thin layer. In this way the small gaps are filled with the thin caulking preventing paint from going under the tape. After painting is done, the tape will still come off easily and leave a clean line.
Other reasons your line was not clean in the past could be that you put the paint on too wet, or you moved your brush from the wall side toward the tape side effectively pushing the paint under the tape. If you brush stroke goes from the tape side to the wall side the chance of an unclean line is much less.
Best of luck.
Use good quality painters tape, seal the line very well where you want to protect other surfaces from getting paint on them. I never have had this problem - the painters tape works well for me and I have painted a lot. I guess it is just a matter of placing it in exactly the right spot and sealing that line well so you don't bleed under the tape. If you remove the tape pulling it in a straight line, not up or down it will also give you a cleaner line and not cause bleeding.
Practice on some spots that you can paint over until you get it just right. As with most things, painting becomes easier with practice and acquired skills - more painting, better job!
Good luck.
Not all blue tape is the same. The more common blue tape (3M #2090) is a long mask, easy release tape, but it has a slight texture because it is a crepe paper tape. The texture allow paint to migrate under the tape.
The best tape for masking graphics and lines is the 3M #2080 tape. This blue tape is smooth vinyl and it will give you clean lines. Rub down the edge of the tape well before painting, Try not to push the paint toward the tape edge - forcing it under the tape, as you paint, this will also help.
The solution to getting clean lines is to paint the edge of the tape with the other color first. This color will bleed under the tape and then you apply the other color when that one dries(30 minutes). Nice clean lines. Be sure to remove the tape as soon as you are done painting the second color
