I'm not in NYC, but they sell them at pharmacies around here, like Walgreens and places like that. There are special ones for protecting the bird flu that have a special filter on them, but they don't sell those around here. I'm just buying a normal cloth face mask. It will prevent you from breathing in droplets released into the air by infected people.

surgical masks will not protect against a virus, they are too porous. It takes an N95 respirator or better, you might be able to get one at a medical supply outlet, but you have to be fitted for them.
You can get them at your local Rite~Aid %26amp; Albertsons in the medical supplies section. The Nurse above me here is correct.
