You should wash your hands after being around people and public places. You should refrain from touching your nose, eyes, and ears. And you should stay away from close contact with people who are coughing or sneezing. This will help prevent getting ANY type of influenza including swine flu.

Don't bother with a surgical mask. That doesn't offer the person wearing it much protection. The surgeon wears it to protect the patient since it filters more when you exhale than when you inhale. Those paper masks with the little blue rubber band are useless too.
A mask that protects the person wearing it has to make a complete seal around your nose/mouth and have some kind of filter.
