I have to ride crowded trains almost every day in Tokyo where thousands of people are coughing and sneezing around me. I hate getting sick so this winter I'm going to do everything I can to prevent it! Would wearing a surgical mask really help prevent me from catching something or can the viruses penetrate the mask?
BTW, in Japan it's not strange to see people wearing surgical masks out in public so the ';embarrassment factor'; is no problem!
