Why would you want to wear a mask at home? Cloth has a different fiber mesh than a surgical mask (measured in microns). Everyday our immune systems fight off infections that we've had before. If we haven't had it yet, we will get it. The immune system takes a picture so that it can be recognized the next time it is introduced into our bodies therefore being able to fight it off. When someone around you is coughing or sneezing, you need to exhale til the germs are no longer airborne. Remind those around you to cough into their sleeves. Think of everything you touch in public (doors, etc) as contaminated and wash your hands before you touch your eyes, nose, mouth. You can wear a mask all day long, but what happens when you take the mask off? Cloth will filter out only large molecules...germs come in all sizes. Can also enhance your own immune system with Vit C and echanecia several times a day. Be well, and don't be too afraid. Your immune system has a mind of its own....If wearing a surgical mask helps?
I know that if you wear a bandana soaked in vinegar around your nose and mouth, it will protect you from getting choked up by tear gas. On the other hand they say that if you are wearing any sterile barrier that is wet from water that it is considered contaminated at that point. I don't know how well vinegar stands up against harmful microbes. I would wear a surgical mask if I had to choose. They have different types of face masks made with different types of materials, with different types of fits, and different amounts of layers. I know that they make special masks for people who paint so they don't inhale toxic fumes, so it would be safe to assume that one should choose the appropraite mask for the respective job. But if you don't think you can afford a gas mask, try the vinegar and bandana.

Why do people wear dust/surgical mask during winter months??
I wear them during the fall because of my sever allergies. I also wear them during certain times in the summer because of pollen, definitely wear them when I'm mowing the grass.

Maybe in Mexico and other 3rd world countries with no advanced or accessible medical facilities there is cause for concern, but not here.

Where can I find those surgical masks that cover my mouth/nose?
